Biography
Born in Florence in 1987, Francesco Cangi is a trombonist, multi-instrumentalist and composer who has been drawn to music since childhood. Self-taught in his early years, he discovered the trombone in his late teens and soon found himself on stages across Italy in the horn section of Dirotta Su Cuba.
He went on to study at the jazz conservatories of Bologna and Rovigo, graduating with top honours under the mentorship of Maestro Massimo Morganti. That jazz foundation became the springboard for a career spanning jazz, pop and electronic music.
As a trombonist and multi-instrumentalist he performs, tours and records with prominent Italian and international artists, including Elisa, Alfa, Ultimo, Roy Paci, Irene Grandi, Arisa, Fabrizio Bosso, Nico Gori, Billy Cobham, Cristina Donà and Fabio Morgera, among many others.
He is the founder, producer and composer of Francesco Cangi & The Lonely Rockets, a project born to bring high-level jazz training together with his pop-rock background: nu jazz with a cinematic rock edge, deep grooves and powerful melodies. The band’s debut album, What if the Universe..?, came out in April 2025.
Alongside performing, Francesco teaches. In 2026 he led The Modern Jazz Trombone, a masterclass series for the Jazz Department of the Cherubini Conservatory in Florence.
